Thriving Together
The Scottish Design Exchange has traded from premises on George Street since 2020, and we opened Tron Kirk Market in 2022. As CEO, I was genuinely surprised by the noticeable difference in cleanliness and levels of anti-social behaviour between the New Town and the Old Town. At times, it felt as though I was running businesses in two completely different cities.
Our experience as a member of Essential Edinburgh’s New Town BID has demonstrated the tangible value that a well-run BID can bring to businesses. We benefit from a dedicated Clean Team, which focuses on keeping the area welcoming for businesses, residents and visitors.
The Retail Radio system allows businesses across George Street, Princes Street and Rose Street to communicate quickly and share information. This is complemented by the online Check Out system, which circulates photographs and details of shoplifters, helping staff to remain alert and businesses to feel better connected and supported. On several occasions, the Check Out system has helped us identify known shoplifters and prevent thefts.
Essential Edinburgh provides regular updates on events, road closures, city-centre activity and other issues that could affect trading. Businesses are consulted and involved in shaping annual events, including the summer and Christmas programmes. Crucially, the BID also provides a collective voice, representing the needs and concerns of businesses in discussions with the Council and other organisations.
However, the greatest benefit is the personal connection. Essential Edinburgh staff visit our premises, know our team and keep us informed about what is happening locally. This includes visits from the dedicated community police officer. Our staff feel that they are part of a supportive business community, rather than having to face local challenges alone.
A BID levy should not simply be viewed as another business cost. When it is invested effectively, it provides services, representation, communication and practical support that individual businesses would struggle to secure on their own.
This is why I am championing the Old Town BID and have been delighted to join its Steering Group alongside other local business owners. I believe an Old Town BID presents an important opportunity for businesses to work together, influence how the area develops and create a cleaner, safer and more welcoming environment, for our staff and our customers. One in which we can all thrive.
